Urban Revitalisation or Isolation [?]

The Maboneng Precinct with its Arts on Main, Main Street Life and 12 Decades Hotel has been a popular magnet for Joburgers for a while now. The gentrification of this inner city’s corner sprouted some truly inspiring spaces, but is it really a case of Urban Revitalisation or is it more tending toward Isolation.
I love spending time there. I love the intention and fully support urban development especially in the vibrant, rough city of Joburg. However, this development, like it’s cousin, the Neighbourgoods Market, still always spark a sense of disappointment and sadness in me with its potental to isolate its immediate residents. How do these developments affect the homeless man on the street?
What do you think? Love or hate, it’s still sparking something.

These are photographs from my last outing out on the roof deck of the 12 Decades Hotel, some of which have been uploaded to my Instagram account as well (shaakira_chohan).
Sunshine, views of the city, great music and great company – all the right ingredients needed!
